With the rapid development of China’s game industry in recent years, there is a growing demand for game-related positions, and more and more games emphasize character development and cinematic storytelling. These industry trends align with my learning and practice areas. In this journal, I will connect my current animation background with the Chinese game industry, focusing on reflecting on my portfolio preparation, technical skills, industry knowledge, teamwork, and future career paths.
First, I want to discuss my portfolio preparation. As is well known, the game industry values a strong portfolio. I believe my portfolio should showcase my best work, emphasizing cinematic storytelling and visual expression. I’m glad I have some usable pieces to include. While I have sufficient material, a consistent style and strong relevance to the game industry are what I lack. I need to add more work in these areas before applying for jobs. Simultaneously, to create a better portfolio, I’m learning concept workflows to better position myself in cinematic visual roles. Furthermore, I frequently browse the presentation methods and layouts of outstanding artists on Artists. Furthermore, technically speaking, since I’m currently focused on 2D animation, I believe it’s essential to learn 3D software, such as Unreal Engine and Blender, which are used in industrialized 3D workflows. My proficiency and application of 3D software is still significantly lacking.
Besides a portfolio, I think understanding the game industry’s production process is also crucial. Most large companies have industrialized production lines, and I need to find my place within these lines. For example, a game animation pipeline includes initial concept design, modeling, rigging, animation, rendering, engine integration, and gameplay testing. Currently, I’d prefer to participate in initial concept design roles, but acquiring more 3D skills would broaden my career path.
In short, I hope to continue refining my portfolio in the future, maintaining my existing skills while learning more 3D software. I hope that my experience and hard work will help me be better prepared for entering the Chinese game industry in the future.
